Most of us have our social media platform of choice. The one we turn to during those few minutes of downtime. A quick check of friends’ updates. A little recipe inspiration. Maybe local events, news, or outfit ideas. But most of us have also recognized that what starts as a harmless few minutes can quickly turn into mindless scrolling… adding up to hours of lost time every week.

For me, that platform is Instagram.

It’s where I catch up on local happenings, see what friends are up to, and yes, sometimes get great outfit ideas. But even doing the work I do, and even teaching about conscious screen use and attention in my workshops, I still found myself getting pulled in. Because the truth is, this isn’t just about self-discipline. These apps are brilliantly designed to keep us engaged for as long as possible.

When the Limits Stop Working

After realizing that my screen time limit was no longer working (and yes, I was absolutely hitting “add 15 minutes” over and over again), I knew I needed to be more aggressive. I was entering a particularly busy season personally and professionally, with tight deadlines and a lot on my plate. I needed my time and focus back.

So I did something bold. I deleted Instagram off my phone.

Now technically, I could still access it from my laptop. But here’s the thing: Instagram on a computer is incredibly inconvenient. It’s slow. Clunky. You can scroll, but not easily. Posting is harder. Editing is limited. Re-sharing content is frustrating. And honestly, I’m convinced that’s intentional.

The Unexpected Benefit of Friction

Ironically, that inconvenience became exactly what I needed. I would log on, post what I needed to for work, maybe scroll a little, and then log right back off because there simply wasn’t much temptation to stay. Over time, my screen time dropped dramatically. And I gained back so much time.

Not just productivity. Mental space. Presence. Focus. I felt less fragmented throughout the day. More available for my family, my work, and honestly, myself.

So naturally, after a few months, I thought I had it under control. I convinced myself my habits had changed enough that I could put the app back on my phone.

Within about 48 hours, I was right back in it. Scrolling quickly. Checking constantly. Reaching for my phone without even thinking about it. Those endless little dopamine hits pulled me right back in almost immediately. And honestly, it was such an important reminder of something I teach all the time: our self-discipline is no match for technology intentionally designed to capture our attention.

The difference this time, though, was that I recognized it much faster. I could feel the pull happening again almost immediately. So back off my phone it went. Not because I “failed,” but because I finally understood that protecting my attention sometimes requires stronger boundaries than I’d like to admit.

Why Hard Stop Boundaries Matter

That’s why we shouldn’t feel ashamed to put hard stop boundaries around our screen use. Sometimes the healthiest solution isn’t moderation. Sometimes it’s removing the temptation altogether.

For some people, that might mean screen time apps. For others, it may look like leaving your phone in another room during focused work. And for some of us, it may mean taking certain apps off our phones entirely and only using them intentionally when needed.

If we don’t learn to manage our attention, we risk more than lost productivity. We risk becoming less present, less connected, less focused, and less fulfilled.

Our attention shapes our lives. And in today’s world, protecting it may be one of the healthiest boundaries we can set.
