Another Spa? I know we’re the Spa City and all, but do we need yet another? After visiting the new Sacred Spa + Wellness that just opened in August, I can assure you that this one is unlike any other I have ever visited. Sacred is a “holistic spa” dedicated to optimum health and wellness through mind, body, beauty and soul practices. I’m not a huge spa person but THIS is my jam, people. Stepping into the spa facility, located on a stunning 100 acre horse farm, transported me from my busy daily life in Saratoga into a calmness that felt a world away.
Their integrative health and spa services treat the body as a whole. Basic offerings include standard spa treatments like massages, facials and baths. And then there’s more sophisticated ones like laser and light skin treatments, infrared saunas, microneedling, and hydrafacials. Sacred also offers Eastern holistic treatments like acupuncture and cupping. Their small apothecary includes body and skin products, as well as a line of botanical syrups. Organic wines or coffee drinks can be enjoyed at “The Divine” botanical and wine bar or while checking out the horses and flower gardens. And all of these services offered within the walls of a gorgeously renovated horse stable, with plenty of elevated details (i.e. my take-home sachet with Hermès body products.) It’s pretty spectacular.
After visiting the spa to check it out for myself, I got a chance to catch up with the woman behind this venture, Dr. Abby Reed. Dr. Reed answered some questions about how she came up with this brilliant concept, what else she’s up to, and how she’s managing it all.
SACRED KANSAS CITY CAME FIRST, CORRECT?
Sacred KC began as a mobile acupuncture business in 2017. We traveled to homes, businesses and boutiques creating acupuncture parties for gatherings and celebrations. The Real Housewives inspired me with their Botox parties. We specialize in cosmetic acupuncture, a Botox alternative, so we created a healthier version for people in Kansas City through acupuncture.
In 2020, I gave Sacred a home, creating a boutique practice in a Victorian mansion called Sacred Chiropractic + Acupuncture. While it was terrifying to open at the start of the pandemic, I felt that people deeply needed a tranquil place to retreat away from the chaos.
WHY ON A THOROUGHBRED HORSE FARM?
I fell in love with a man who was in the horse racing business in Saratoga. We bought the farm a year ago, known today as GMP Farm, which is also an equine rehabilitation center. We both felt like the farm would be an idyllic place for people to rest, restore and retreat using our experience at Sacred in Kansas City and bringing it to the Saratoga Springs community.
WHAT IS A ‘HOLISTIC’ SPA?
A holistic spa treats the whole person. Our beauty philosophy involves treating our guests from within to create a healthy glow on the outside. We do this by addressing all realms of wellness: physically, emotionally, spiritually and energetically. Our approach is gentle and intentional, with our guests’ utmost wellbeing in mind. Sacred is a luxury spa with soul.
WHAT ELSE IS OFFERED THERE?
We have an apothecary with slow beauty farm-to-skin products from Sausalito California, tinctures and elixirs made by an herbalist in Kansas City, a Parisian body line and several products from Saratoga Tea and Honey. The Divine, our botanical coffee and wine bar, is a great place for further relaxing on your own or with your group. Picnic tables surrounded by flower gardens allow visitors to watch the horses exercise. We also have a yoga studio on site.
HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT THAN YOUR AVERAGE MEDSPA?
We focus on energy-based technologies like lasers and radiofrequency that promote the body’s own intelligence to heal and transform. At Sacred, we offer Cutera technology with truSculpt id, Secret RF microneedling and the Xeo laser that performs laser hair removal, Laser Genesis, IPL and vein treatments. Each session is paired with a guided meditation and aromatherapy as well as a Skin Rx prescription to continue your body and skin care wellness routine at home.
WHICH DAILY HABITS HAVE BEEN CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS?
Being in nature and moving my body every day is an essential ritual of mine. I am a trail marathon runner and much of the wisdom and inspiration I have received for Sacred over the years has been on a run or in a forest. Yoga, chiropractic and acupuncture have also helped to transform my own health journey. Searching for and finding true love (and sharing good company) has also been essential to my success as well.
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO OTHER WOMEN WHO HAVE BIG DREAMS AND DON’T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?
When you get out of your comfort zone every single day in all parts of your life, that is when you begin to change and expand. I recommend reading the book Untamed by Glennon Doyle. The book talks about creating and living the truest, most beautiful version of your life. Surround yourself with successful women you admire and that you can learn from. If you cannot find people in your own life, seek them through podcasts. Some of my favorite podcasts are The Divine Living podcast by Gina DeVee, Style Your Mind Podcast, Blissfully Living, Her Money and Earn Your Happy. Learn more about yourself with The Artist’s Way workbook.
My last words of wisdom: Travel if you’re able to. It changes and expands your brain and also brings new people, knowledge and inspiration to you.
