This week, I’m chatting with Jessica Lang, founder of The Social Localist, a boutique social media and digital marketing solutions provider. In this world of Covid, we’re spending SO much time on ZOOM or video conferences. Jess shares some mistakes we may be making that are leaving a not-so-good impression with our fellow meeting attendees.
THINK ABOUT YOUR LIGHTING. Be sure to face the window with the light shining on your face. If you film in front of the window, you will be “blacked out”. If you cannot get natural light, invest in a ring light. You can purchase a stand-alone adjustable ring light, similar to the one that I have, here. Another option is a small ring light that attaches to your laptop or phone, specifically made for video conferences, like this one.
DON’T BE LATE. Treat it like an in-person meeting. If you are in a situation where you are running a bit late, let the host know via email or text. If you are running very late, suggest rescheduling.
DON’T ZONE OUT. Even if you’re bored. If someone is talking for an extended amount of time and you’ve put yourself on mute, it’s tempting to zone out. Remember that your facial expressions are telling. Do your best to stay mindful and engaged in these situations.
BE AWARE OF WHAT’S IN YOUR BACKGROUND. Clutter or craziness in the background can be incredibly distracting to other participants. In addition, if you are on a call with attendees that you don’t know well, be aware of any sensitive or personal information you may be sharing. This is a safety measure that we often overlook in this new world of virtual meetings.
DON’T MULTITASK OR EAT. No one wants to hear you chewing during a call, unless you’ve agreed to a working lunch. In addition, save your other tasks for later, like checking email or scrolling through your phone. Both are common, and are incredibly disrespectful to the other participants.
AVOID USING FILTERS OR SILLY BACKGROUNDS. That is, unless you ABSOLUTELY know how to turn them off. For anyone who has not seen the video of the virtual court hearing in Texas last week, do yourself a favor and watch THIS. You get it.
